Did you know that the Willow china pattern tells a love story? I've retold it here in a Blue Willow-inspired scene. The story goes that after a wealthy girl eloped with a poor man, three figures hurrying across a bridge and a man in a boat search for them. The lovers escape by being transformed into two doves who are able to be together.
When I was growing up, my family's everyday dishes were blue and pink willow, so the scene is familiar to me. I've interpreted it with subtle color and a bamboo treillage painted frame. The frame mirrors the windows of the pagoda, so you feel like you are looking out a window at the scene.
My chinoiserie paintings are a blend of both sides of my heritage. Each work is signed with both my American English signature and my red seal.
